Crypt Guide: Efficiency, Gear and Tar
2026-09-30
Exploring crypts well comes down to two numbers. Almost everything below serves one of them, and the aim never changes: finish a crypt on the least tar you can.
The two numbers everything else serves
To explore crypts as well as they can be explored you need to understand two things: crypt exploration efficiency, and crypt exploration cost.
Almost every optimisation and every tip below is tied, one way or another, to one of those two. The aim is to finish a crypt using the least tar possible. Simple enough, isn’t it?
Bringing exploration cost down
Three ways, and all three are needed for exploration efficiency as well, which is why they come first.
Bringing exploration efficiency up
Here there are many more ways.

Carter, and nobody else
Use Carter to explore crypts. The exceptions come at the end, and they only apply to players at high levels.
Keep his star level and his level as high as you can afford. Your XP packages should go to him until he is level 300, which is where his level bonus stops improving — past that point they are better spent elsewhere.
Tomb RaiderTo start with
OmniscienceHarder to come by, and better
AmberThe gem. It drops in the Dracorne Crypt
PioneerThe enchantment, for crypt explorationTwo sets improve crypt exploration and you are only ever wearing one of them. The gem and the enchantment are not a third choice: they go on whichever of the two you wear, and Amber at the best level you can afford — it is worth pointing everything you do in rare crypts at getting it until your gems are at a decent level.

Torch of Olympus
If you have it, Carter wears it — always. Keep it at the highest level your star level allows, and keep an eye on its random bonuses too.
Titles
With Premium, Great Archaeologist gives 50 % to crypt exploration. The easiest title to get for this branch is Crypt Explorer, worth 10 %, from the Sealed in Flame side event during the Lava Fountain Trial.
Tips
- Explore the crypts that carry the materials you are after.
- In general, explore the highest-level crypts you can finish in one go.
- Look for crypts where, once speed-ups are applied, the march time comes as close as it can to ten seconds — which is the minimum there is.
- Epic crypts above all, and rare ones to a lesser degree, should not be started until you can do them in a single pass. Epic Tar and Rare Tar are scarce.
When tar stops being scarce
Tar does not stop being scarce all at once. Each of the three lets go at a different size of clan.
Common TarStops being a scarce resource in clans around 3B wealth.
Rare TarStops being scarce in clans between 3B and 30B.
Epic TarStops being scarce in clans from 30B upwards. And then time is the limit, not tar
Once that happens, what stands between you and more Clan Chests is no longer how much tar you have. It is how long the exploring takes.
So the normal thing at that point is to put two or three captains on crypts instead of Carter alone. They need good crypt exploration gear, because they do not carry Carter’s own bonus. Crypting that way is three times faster, and it is what lets you meet whatever minimums the clan sets for the number and the quality of the crypts.
